I had to take a break from watching Linda McMahon's testimony before the House Committee on Education and Labor because it was just...a mess. McMahon was fumbling basic facts (even though she had a staffer passing her cue cards.) She was saying “I’ll have to get back to you on that” every 15 seconds. At one point I was watching like this 😵💫 (and I know I wasn’t the only one.)
So I did what anyone who cares deeply about public schools would do: I called up someone who gets it.
Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) is a longtime champion of public education, arts funding, and student equity. She's been fighting for Title IV-A - that vital program that helps schools fund things like music, art, technology, and school safety - for years. She literally ran for Congress to replace No Child Left Behind.
In this conversation, she breaks down how we got here, why the phrase “waste, fraud, and abuse” is a smokescreen, what’s actually at stake kids and schools if Title IV-A is gutted, and how all this ties back to bigger plans to defund and dismantle the Department of Education.
This conversation was a breath of fresh air, honestly.
In case you missed it, here’s Congresswoman Bonamici questioning Secretary McMahon in the aforementioned hearing.
Enjoy!
